I originally wanted to attend college in California. It has been my dream forever. I heard information about the program and Mount Saint Mary’s University in Los Angeles at a residence life meeting at my home campus, St. Joseph’s University, New York. I was very interested in applying to the program since I could participate without being so far away from home.
The ACSSJ Student Exchange program has allowed me to learn a lot about myself. I was scared to make friends or the idea of not knowing where I was going, but it allowed me to gain a deeper appreciation for St. Joseph University, while also stepping out of my comfort zone.
Another student from St. Joseph’s University is also participating in the program this semester at Mount Saint Mary's University. The most memorable moment is having the opportunity to hear and meet actors, Geena Davis & Miranda Cosgrove, as part of my women in film course that addressed representation in film.
Though the first half of my semester has been rainy, I have been able to enjoy some sunny, beach days. It is different attending another school but refreshing and feels like I am experiencing freshman year again. Other highlights from my experience include: good food and meeting very welcoming people.

I’m a senior psychology major with a fine arts minor. I wanted to study away because I did it in high school and wanted to get away to experience something new. I was looking on my school’s website and I came across the program. I thought studying abroad would be more expensive, but a domestic experience seemed more affordable. I always wanted to experience living in New York, so I thought this was perfect.
Living in New York provided me with a lot of new opportunities. I learned how to navigate the public transportation system. I had incredible access to different cultures and took advantage of exploring this new environment, like finding my favorite Caribbean restaurant. Living in the residence hall was a bit different than at Fontbonne University since the residence hall at St. Joseph’s University has students from different nearby schools such as New York University. During my semester, I found it was up to me to go out, see, and take advantage of all that New York offers. The program inspired me to meet new people, embrace their differences, and share myself with others. Participating in the ACSSJ Student Exchange Program also motivated me to explore the option of relocating states. It showed me that I could do it and sustain myself within a new environment.
I enjoyed campus life and was engaged both outside and in the classroom. I joined the Psychology club which allowed me to connect with other students. I made friends through group projects in classes. At St. Joseph’s University, my professors embraced more discussion-based teaching styles and this was very different from Fontbonne University. This format allowed me to develop my thoughts more about the academic content. Additionally, my professors worked in the fields they were teaching in. For example, I had a forensic psychology class with a faculty member who worked at Rikers Island. It was my favorite class because she would tell us stories from work.
The most memorable moment I had in the program was when my friends visited me for my birthday and I got to show them around New York City. Seeing the Statue of Liberty was cool. I thought the statue would be much bigger! I was also able to experience all of the holiday decorations for Christmas.
The advice I would give students who want to participate in the program would be to do your research on the area, to save before you participate in the program, and consult with your financial aid department.

I studied abroad junior year of high school in Costa Rica and that was a good experience for me. I wanted something similar in college even if it wasn’t out of the country. I did not travel a lot in my childhood, so participating in the program and living in New York was a great opportunity for me.
Overall, my experience was full of adjustments and challenges, but it was a great opportunity. The ACSSJ Student Exchange Program pushed me to accomplish my goals and get out of my comfort zone. I accomplished my goals of making friends and getting a job there. It inspired me to consider more study-abroad opportunities and continue traveling. I miss it every day. I look at the pictures and think about it all the time.
The biggest advice I would give someone interested in the program would be to ask questions and make sure that you have everything situated before leaving for the program.

During my first two years of college, I remember being captivated by the mission to “always move toward profound love”, a common phrase used by the Sisters of Saint Joseph. At some point, I realized that I really resonated with the charism and in result sought out the exchange opportunity to, quite literally, move toward profound love by traveling to other schools within the country that embodied such wisdom.
Out of the eight member campuses to choose from, I decided to spend fall semester at Regis College in Greater Boston and spring semester at St. Joseph’s University in Brooklyn, New York. As a person who loves to travel, I was ecstatic to experience a new culture and community that I’ve never been exposed to - so my journey from coast to coast began! The minute I stepped foot on the beautiful Regis campus, I was welcomed with open arms by both the students and staff. They made sure to make me feel comfortable and provided me with a vast selection of ways to get involved on campus. During my time at Regis, I took upper-division classes, joined 3 clubs, volunteered in Boston, joined glee, and served an active role in their office of Ministry and Service. At St. Joseph’s University, I was also active in Campus Ministry and lived in an off-campus dorm. I am so grateful for the ACSSJ program which provided me this once in a lifetime experience! Because of this opportunity, I feel that I can confidently move forward with my professional career as well as my spiritual life. I have also been able to stay on track with my education and have two experiences on the East Coast Check out the video to learn more about her experience. |

I wanted to study abroad, but due to certain circumstances in the country that I wanted to visit at the time, I could not. By participating in this program, I had an opportunity to finally study in New York City. I valued the opportunity to explore New York. I thought I wanted to live there, but did not know if it was for me. This program showed me that I love living in New York and all the city has to offer by exploring new places. I also met people from different parts of New York and the country where I was able to make friends.
I was impressed by the professional experience of my professors. One of my professors works in the field, so I was able to gain a real world perspective. She would explain how the field works when it comes to marketing from a corporate perspective. This was incredibly helpful since I am minoring in digital design in business administration. I was also able to build great relationships with faculty members that provided me with career and personal advice to help me navigate my future. Although it was unexpected, I ended up transferring to St. Joseph’s University, New York and finding my place in a city I love. I am currently interning for the fashion company in public relations and found that being in New York long term was the best place for me to accomplish my goals.

As a new student at Mount Saint Mary's, I heard about the ACSSJ Student Exchange Program. I was excited about the possibility of studying at another university and returning to New York City.
I would like to take advantage of different opportunities at St. Joseph's University. I have been volunteering with a non-profit in Los Angeles, I am applying to internships in New York City that are connected with my major to advance my future carer plans in working for a non-profit. Additionally, I was seeking an adventure. I want to be exposed to different communities, culture and needs by exploring and becoming a part of a different community other than the one I've experienced for 2 and a half years at Mount Saint Mary's University. It's my time for change. |
